Chicago-Rapper D.Addy today was fined by a subdivision of the FCC for using language “Inappropriate for Urban Airwaves.” The bespectacled star was reached for comment outside of his son’s private school in suburban Flossmoor.
The artist agreed to speak with the Associated Press as he walked back to his home a few blocks away.
AP: You were fined by the FCC.
D.Addy: How much? And for what?
AP: It says here you used language that wasn’t fit to be on urban radio.
D.Addy: Did they elaborate?
AP: Yes. How many Black people say "Elaborate?" We're not in the studio here. Keep it real. It says here that several times within a three minute track, you purposely annunciate each syllable and clearly pronounced the “Rs” and “Gs” that ended certain words.
D.Addy: They may have me there.
AP: Also, they are investigating your latest video.
D.Addy: Wait, wait…that was a bit risky, but on the up and up…
AP: Is it true that you have fully clothed young women in the video READING? There is also a rumor that a young Black man holds a car door for his lady and they are later seen dining in a restaurant that lacks a wall posted menu. The black men shown in the video have neither gold teeth nor sagging pants. One is shown in a cap and gown surrounded by family, which looks to include a father.
D.Addy (uncomfortable): I really ought to talk to Legal before we get into that…
AP: Furthermore, there is your recent comment in Newsweek where you say that if Black ministers really loved Black women, they’d give THEM money instead of the other way around. What's that quote? "How can you ride to church in a Lexus and see your congregation's women waiting in the cold on a bus stop?" We have it on good word you used the word “women.” Did you really think the FCC would let all this slide?
D.Addy: Well…
AP: Perhaps you want to consider if this is the career for you. Any one of these infractions could get you fined. Hip hop is a multibillion dollar industry educating the kids of Caucasian label owners on the dollars of urban ghetto dwellers. The power structure really doesn’t see where there is a place for your music? Care to comment?
D.Addy: I just made the music about the things that I liked and of which I dream. I tried to keep it as real as possible.
AP: You have your critics there, too. “Of which I dream?” Please. How “real” is this? You rap about living in the suburbs, raising your son and fawning over everyday Black women, many of whom you then remain friends with should things not work out. You drive a minivan. You eschew brand names…
D.Addy: That’s not entirely true. I have collected Montblanc fountain pens for years. And Coach makes a great lace up. Ditto Allen Edmond laofers. Some relationships have ended with us not speaking…And in real life, I drive an Altima…
AP:…you don’t live with your mother, you have no baby mama drama…
D.Addy: Ex wife drama doesn’t count?
AP: Stop insulting your public. Black men DON’T GET MARRIED, ergo, they DO NOT GET DIVORCED. Perhaps you would find yourself avoiding FCC fines and the questions of astute journalists if you began living the Black experience as it truly is and having your music reflect that instead of all your fantasies you rap about now. Remember PM Dawn? That didn’t work out too well for them…
D.Addy:It’s like that?
AP: That’s how it appears.
D.Addy: OK, this is my house. I’ll give it some thought. How much do you think the fine will be?
AP: This place? Guess you won’t be on “CRIBS” anytime soon. The word is the FCC is only accepting payment in bling for these fines. Since you are obviously lacking, you may be able to work out a deferment if you can change your ways…
